The primary goal of this course is to introduce startup entrepreneurs to the basics of business law. By the end of this course, every startup will understand the basic legal framework for starting and doing business in Nigeria. This course explains the laws that regulates businesses in Nigeria, the major regulatory bodies for businesses in Nigeria and their roles, and how to register with these regulatory bodies.

This course also goes further to explain the need for business protection and the types of agreements used in business which are relevant for startups, with some templates for startups to make do with in order to legalize business operations.

  • Basic registration guidelines for businesses with regulatory bodies such as Corporate Affairs Commission, Trademark Registry, Standard Organisation of Nigeria, National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration Control, Federal Inland Revenue Service etc.
  • Statutory filings prescribed by law, and business dos and don’ts.
  • Basic business/business idea protection mechanisms and their relevance, e.g. Nondisclosure Agreements, Non compete clauses etc.
  • Agreements and Contracts used in business relationships and their importance.
  • Dispute resolution mechanism for businesses.
  • General legal advice for different classes of businesses and the roles of individuals and government in business.
